Mostly well/made, but dangerous flaws require lots of work

This is a solid, fairly well/designed bed with a serious flaw Its not terribly hard to assemble, but you need to know what youre getting into. The slats in the headboard, footer, and side frame (11 on the side and 8 each on the head and foot, for 27 total) have been stained, but were so poorly milled/trimmed that they were unsafe. The rounded edges of the wood were so full of splinters that they required immediate repair. Lifting these three large parts out of the box with a bare hand resulted in blood. A child would put their hand on this bed (a reasonable possibility, as the flaws are on parts that sit 12/24 inches off the floor) and would end up with a tiny hand full of painful splinters. The staining process seems to have essentially loosely glued the splinters in a fixed position, sharp and dangerous to the touch. Over 20 of of these slats were so rough and had such significant protruding pieces of wood that we had to sand them all down by hand to get to a point where it felt safe. It took a long time, was a lot of work, and removed the stain. So, if you buy this you will absolutely have to sand it down for safety, and then you have to choose between re/staining the 3 large parts yourself (another time/consuming chore, and youd have to purchase and match the stain) or live with a bed that has large parts of the wood stain sanded off. If the manufacturer can change the assembly process to insure the wood is smooth and safe, this would be a solid 5/star item. Its nice/looking, otherwise easy to assemble, and solidly designed. Without changes, though, I cannot recommend it to anyone except someone with lots of extra time and the hardware to sand/trim the wood and restain it to match what they did at the factory. compare to the price
