    Better than average

Theres a whole bunch of nearly identical fans out there. So identical, in fact, that many of the parts are interchangeable with some small variations. Heres what I like about this one over some of the others: This worked on a sloped ceiling. Not only did it include 3 different lengths of poles, but there was enough clearance over the top of the ball mount that the remote control receiver still fit in the space without getting crushed. Theres a limit, but it worked on my ceiling. Some of the other fans didnt allow enough space here and wouldnt work if the fan wasnt hanging straight down. This fan includes an extra magnetically-attached trim ring to cover the screws holding up the top housing. Without that, youd be looking at two silver screwheads on an otherwise black housing. Heres what I dont like: Like the others Ive seen, the control module defaults to turning on the light when power is applied to the unit. This works out pretty well if youre installing it on a circuit with a wall switch - you walk into the room and you can turn on the light. The downside of that is if theres a short power outage in the middle of the night, your overhead light is going to come on full brightness! I dont know about you, but to me thats pretty objectionable. The light housing is plastic. Cant really tell the difference once its installed, but it just seems cheap for a fan that costs almost $200. The lights are not dimmable. You can change the color, but not the intensity. Why must everything BEEP? Seems like consumer electronics all have an overinflated sense of self-importance these days, and this fan is no exception. Every time you press a button on the remote, the fan lets out a beep. I dont need a beep to tell me that the light just turned on or off - I can see that already thanks. And I also dont need a beep to confirm that the fan turned off, or changed speed or mode or anything else. I CAN SEE IT. Just do what I tell you and stop bothering me. All of these wooden propeller-shaped fans seem to move a lot more air than their traditional flat paddle-fan alternatives. So much so, that even on the lowest setting it creates a bit more breeze than I prefer over my bed. I find Im using this in the winter mode instead so that it moves air in the room without creating a strong draft. Itd be great if there was a super-slow fan setting.
