I purchased this bed after much research. First, I like the dimesions and look of the bed. It is just about exactly the size they say. The bed does not sit much higher than any other platform bed, with the siderails and footboard at 14.25 high and the mattress sitting about 3 under that. It is very sturdy and VERY easy to assemble-took about an hour and that was taking my time. I was concerned about the middle support from what I read, but it is very solid with the 4 support legs-anybody who only got two should get the rest. I do wish the middle beam ran the entire length of the bed, but it is about 4 inches short of the footboard and headboard-not a huge deal. I was disappointed that it stated it is made of solid wood with veneers, but it has very little actual solid wood. The head and footboard appear to have thick veneers, but the siderails are plywood covered with very thin veneer that could peel easily. One of the rails arrived slightly damaged on one end where the plywood was smushed and the veneer was peeled a little. The packaging for the head and footboards are very good, but the siderails were not protected enough on the ends for me. We decided to keep it as it is hidden in our bedroom pretty easily, but I will be contacting customer service to see what credit we can get.
2/21/11 update:
After contacting Cymax I was VERY impressed with their service. They asked for a pics of the damage and then immediately had send us some new siderails. When the new siderails arrived they, to, were damaged. This time worse than before. There was a 2 gouge in one rail that was painted or markered over at the factory. Let me be clear-this was not damaged during shipping or it would not have been covered up. This was noticed at the factory and they still shipped it out. Very poor quality control. There was also, still, no packaging around the wood-just a layer of cardboard and the wood rails even rub against eachother inside the box. I contacted Cymax again and, again, they were quick to help out. They even offered us a discount for the trouble. They had a number of conversations with furniture and had another set of rails sent to us with the s assurance they would be packaged better. Well the third set arrived and, again, had more dings-although this time not nearly as bad. After contacting Cymax they offer to try and send more or refund the bed. We chose to just keep what we had and get the refund as it appears is incapable of packaging these properly.
I give furniture only 2 stars at this point, but Cymax gets a 5 in my book for their excellent customer service and attention to the concerns of the customer.
I recently purchased this bed online after agonizing for weeks over it. I needed a new bed for a guest room, so I didnt want to spend a lot. I figured a platform bed would be the best bet, as the mattress and box spring we were going to use was about 15 high. I really dont like buying something I havent seen in person, but I watched a product video, looked at swatches online (magnified), read ALL the reviews I could find on the product, and was encouraged by people online saying the bed was beautiful, etc. etc. I was more concerned that the company I was buying it through, CSN, might not be that reliable, as people seemed to be very critical about them. Many reviewers talking about CSN dont seem to understand that they are NOT the manufacturer of the products being ordered, and are actually a dropshipper, meaning they are a go-between for the manufacturer and the consumer. They shouldnt be blamed for flaws in the PRODUCT. I tried finding the Nevis bed in a retail store so I could see it in person, but NOBODY had it. It seems most of their business is done online, although I DID manage to find another bed they make - the RIVA, which I saw in person in a Sleepys mattress store. I LOVED the Riva, and it looked really well made. I especially liked that the color was listed as Espresso, the same as the Nevis, and it was so dark as to be almost black. It was really very pretty, but just to be extra-safe, I called the manufacturer (not easy to get their number, by the way), and asked if the Riva and Nevis beds were made of exactly the same wood, and were they the same color. I was told that they are exactly the same wood. So, feeling confident about the bed, but not so much about CSN, I made my online purchase. And....I have to say, CSN was awesome. I didnt have one bit of trouble with the purchase, the customer service, or the shipment. It arrived exactly when they said it would, and the driver even put it inside the doorway for me, even though the free shipping said it was only going to be curbside delivery. BUT - and its a BIG but - the bed is NOT what I thought it would be. Dont get me wrong - its really sturdy and well-made, and relatively easy to assemble, although I do think beds are a bit easier to assemble. And the feet in the middle DO touch the floor - you just have to get down there and unscrew them far enough. It has lovely lines, and the style is very pretty. Modern, but not so modern that it doesnt fit with my more traditional furniture. BUT - the wood is a disappointment. As another reviewer pointed out, it DOES ding very easily. And it IS a pretty color, but it is NOT THE SAME COLOR AS THE RIVA, although MFI told me it is. Its more of a deep deep burgundy-brown, and it will be very hard to match a dresser to. If I had gotten the almost-black Riva, I would have been able to buy a black dresser to match. But the Nevis is going to be tough to match - and I dont really want to buy another piece from MFI, sight unseen. The other thing I dont like about it is that the wood grain is very prominent on parts of the bed. It annoys me, but thats because Im used to solid wood furniture I guess....Im not sure. My husband and my daughter both really really like this bed, though, so if you arent too fussy about the color of the wood, and you are looking for a solid, somewhat modern platform bed, this is definitely a nice bed for the price. Another thing that I have to admit is nice about this bed is that it isnt super-low to the ground, like so many platform beds. Its a reasonable height, especially for taller people. And the 15 height of our mattress and box works perfectly, as the top of the footboard is even with the top of the mattress. If you want to just use a mattress (the bed comes with wood slats as a mattress base), that will look fine too. I gave the bed four stars, because it really is sturdy, nice, and a great price - but wasnt quite what I had hoped. And for the record, CSN was great, and Id definitely buy from them again!
I just bought a house and was accordingly cash-poor, but needed a new bed and wanted to buy something I would be happy with for a few years before I decided to invest time and money into higher-end furniture. This bed seemed like a good compromise and I would probably consider buying it again in the same situation.
Delivery people were on time and carried the bed up to my 3rd-floor unit no problem. The main box was pretty beat up, but there were no scratches or other damage to the wood, so good job on packaging there.
Assembly was more irritating that it needed to be and there were a number of unfortunate engineering decisions:
- trying to mount the central support beam under the slats after they had been laid was cumbersome and frustrating. It really should connect to the frame, not just the slates.
- the outer frame is held together only by L-braces, which makes it difficult to square properly. Furthermore, the screws in the outer frame are somewhat obstructed by the slats, so tightening down after laying the slats to square the frame doesnt really work
- the legs under the central support beam are poorly connected: the anchors all pulled out causing the legs to fall off and the bed to partially collapse while I was...practicing my advanced partner yoga. The instructions did warn against over-tightening, which was probably the reason they ripped out, but there was no clear way to tell what over-tightening entailed. If they had used a 30-cent anchor instead of a 10-cent anchor, this would not be a problem. I fixed it with some wood screws to mount the legs to the beam, which seems to hold up just fine.
All things considered, I felt like a craftsman could have done a much better job engineering this piece and the result would only have been a marginal increase in the cost of the materials with considerably simplified setup and a sturdier product.
That said, the final product is decent after a bit of love. It looks good, it feels reasonably solid, and the price is pretty fair for something with a bit of style. And I do like the fact that buying matching bedroom furniture is easy.
The delivery company twice stuck a forkblade lift through the delivered boxes, but thats not fault - its s delivery company, and they refuse to use another.
The bed is sturdy, handsome, fairly easy to put together (even though the instructions fell out through a blade hole, so I had to make do with similar but different instructions from the website. Had some problems aligning the slats due to that.)
Otherwise though, very nice bed.
UPDATE: With age, this bed has started to have the creaking issues common in so many beds. Every few months I have to get under there and tighten up all the screws. Not particularly tough, but annoying.
I purchased this bed in CA king size for my memory foam mattress was pleasantly surprised! It is beautiful and sturdy. No particle board. Nice espresso finished hardwood with glides pre-installed on all the legs, so its easy to move around. Slatted platform is securely screwed to frame for stability, evenly spaced with connecting double ribbons.
Not only was it shipped fast, it was easy to transport (3 boxes) assemble -- minor issue with 2 predrilled holes not lining up (easily remedied with drill).
I assembled it upside down flipped it over with no trouble Im 52 a weakling.
Spectacular cost far less than ugly plastic/metal bed foundations.
This is a REALLY nice bed at a great price. We did a LOT of online shopping and this bed got a lot of positive reviews on many different sites. I generally do not buy something like this site unseen but.... that was what a lot of other reviewers said who gave it positive reviews which made me comfortable to do the same.
The set up was simple -- my 9 year old and I did it together in about an hour -- only because I didnt want to wait for my husband to come home!!! I would suggest that you read the directions all the way through first to make sure you understand them -- they were very vague but certainly understandable if you take the time to digest them.
I had read from other reviewers that they suggested to put an extra support down the middle slat. I didnt realize until reading another persons review that the feet on the center supports are adjustable. Many people complained that the feet didnt touch the floor which is true but there is a remedy -- I wish the directions had stated that!
I love that it helped create room that my daughter really didnt have in her small bedroom. She is 4 and hasnt fell out of bed or anything so Id say its rather safe for her. She loves it and so do we. My husband assembled in a hour or so and it was rather easy to assemble.
My kids love their new beds! They are sturdy and were easy to assemble. It took my husband about 4 hours to put them both together and I got the tents because I thought they were so cute and my kids are crazy about them. Also I am 180 pounds and I laid on both with no problems at all.
I was looking for a loft bed for my grandchildren. I didnt want it to be too high. And I wanted it to be built well to last. products always fit the bill. This loft bed exceeded my expectations. And I made a little play area underneath with a television mounted to the wall, and toy storage. They love it.
My son LOVES his new bed! It took my step-dad a couple hours to assemble, so be aware of that. But the quality is really excellent. I love how its lower than a normal bunk style bed, so its safer for my 5 year old. I feel completely comfortable with him sleeping here. The height is perfect, so there is room for stuff underneath, like toy storage or a fort!

A-minus for look and feel, C for engineering, decent deal for the price
